Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS)

GEEBILS is a common entrance examination in biology and interdisciplinary life sciences, coordinated by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Each participating institution operates an independent admissions process using the JGEEBILS result together with other inputs.

The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research is India's premier institution for advanced research in fundamental sciences. The Institute runs a graduate program leading to the award of PhD, Integrated MSc-PhD as well as MSc degree in certain subjects. With its distinguished faculty, world-class facilities, and stimulating research environment, it is an ideal place for aspiring scientists to initiate their careers.

The TIFR Nationwide Entrance Examination (GS-2024) for Biology is also called the Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS). See https://www.ncbs.res.in/academic/admissions-JGEEBILS. All participating JGEEBILS institutions use the score from this examination, but each institution has its own admission procedure. Students need to apply separately to each institution that uses the JGEEBILS score.

The primary route by which TIFR Centres (DBS-Mumbai/NCBS-Bangalore/TIFR-Hyderabad) receive applications for the Graduate Programme in Biology is via the TIFR/JGEEBILS exam. Candidates will be shortlisted for on-campus interviews based on exam marks, CV, scientific write-up, and letters of recommendation. Each TIFR Centre shortlists candidates independently.

TIFR-DBS, TIFR-H, TIFR-NCBS, and DBT-InStem will also consider candidates based on their GATE/CSIR/UGC-NET rank. Via this route, we will only consider candidates if you are in the top 5 percentile of ranks (e.g. you must have a rank of 100 or better if a total of 2000 candidates appeared for the corresponding exam). In the full application, you will be required to state your GATE/CSIR/UGC-NET rank and upload the corresponding Scorecard as supporting evidence.
